William H. Spencer founded the Alliance
Rubber Company in 1923 in Alliance,
Ohio. Back then, William would obtain
rejected Rubber Inner Tubes used for
Bicycles from Dunlop and began cutting
them into Rubber Bands in his basement.
Meanwhile, William was also moonlighting
on the Pennsylvania Railroad for the
first 16 years in business, but in 1930
he purchased his first building and
began actual tubing production.
Pioneering new
markets for Rubber Bands, William gained
true inspiration one day after seeing
the Akron, Ohio Beacon-Journal Newspaper
blowing across the lawns in his
neighborhood. William was able to
persuade the Circulation Manager to
secure the newspapers with Rubber Bands
from Alliance Rubber Company. The Akron
Beacon-Journal and the Tulsa World were
the first newspapers in the country to
use Rubber Bands on home delivery
routes. William also persuaded Produce
Markets which were at the time, using
string and twine to bundle vegetables to
start using Alliance Rubber Company
Rubber Bands.
Later, as business
blossomed, and the products gained
further refinement, William opened a new
Production Plant in 1944 in Hot Springs,
Arkansas. This was followed by new
Facilities in Franklin, Kentucky in 1957
and Salinas, California in 1988.
Alliance Rubber Company patented the
Open-Ring® style Rubber Band in 1957
which set the World Standard for
efficiency and ease of application.
In 1970 Alliance
Rubber Company installed the world's
first Continuous Cure Band Production
Line, and in 1991 the Alliance, Ohio
Plant was consolidated into the Hot
Springs Facility. Almost Eighty Five
years later, the Alliance Rubber Company
is still a Family Owned and Operated
Business, providing the world's largest
variety of Rubber Bands and over 2,000
sku's of Strapping & Cable Management,
UPC Imprinted ProTape®, Mailing and
